Manganese, 25, Cresent School (Summer), Toronto, ON
Manganese:  Our tile incorporates three elements associated with manganese: the founder, stained glass and magnetism. Johan Gottlieb Gahn, the first to isolate manganese, is front and centre on the tile. The colourful background is made to resemble stained glass, one of the element’s first uses. Manganese compounds were used to add and remove colour from glass. The letters ‘M’ and ‘n’, are made to look like magnets due to the element’s presence in ores that were found to be magnetic. Original artwork generated as a class activity.
