Planning Student

Play a role in shaping your community's future.

The Planning Program is...

  • A professional program - accredited by the Canadian Institute of Planners, the Planning program will give you advanced standing in your career path
  • Practical - co-op, studying under practicing professionals, and networking events will help you make the transition into the professional world.
  • In demand - The Urban Planning field is expected to grow by 19% by 2018 and was listed as one of top 50 best careers for 2011 by the U.S. News and World Report.

Over the course of your studies, you'll learn about:

  • Transportation Planning - Plan your community's transportation facilities - streets, highways, sidewalks, bike lanes, and public transport lines.
  • Urban Design - Shape the look and feel of your community - streetscapes, downtown core, and public spaces.
  • Environmental Planning - Enhance your community's sustainability by preserving green spaces and encouraging the development of green buildings.

You can choose specializations in areas that complement Planning, such as geographic information systems (GIS), environmental planning and management, urban design and land development.

You can also choose to explore other options with specializations in business, parks, sustainable local economic development, and environmental assessment amongst others.

 A chance to travel

Planning students in Oxford. As a Planning student, you’ll have the opportunity to study at Oxford Brookes University for a 3 week course- one of the most highly regarded planning schools in the UK.

As many planning theories and practices in Canada are drawn from UK roots, studying overseas means you’ll gain valuable hands-on experience and develop new perspectives in a field you love.

During free time, you’ll have the opportunity to travel through the UK and across Europe. There is even an opportunity to remain overseas following the Oxford course for further travel.

Bring your ideas to the world

The Planning program is based in a real world environment. You'll work on projects based on areas in your own backyard, and all over the world. Evan, pictured above, worked as part of a team that created a winning idea for an innovative, sustainable community in Saskatchewan.
