Teaching

In 2010, the University of Waterloo was ranked Canada’s No. 1 Comprehensive Research University for the third year in a row in the annual “Canada Top 50 Research Universities” survey conducted by the national consulting firm Research Infosource.

In 2009/10, our faculty, staff, and students attracted $169.5 million from public and private sources to fund research across a spectrum of challenges.

More than 120 University of Waterloo faculty members have received awards in recognition of their excellent teaching. Dozens of others have received grants in support of their scholarship of teaching and learning, or to support the development of innovative teaching resources.

Distinguished Teacher Awards

The Distinguished Teacher Awards (DTA) were established in 1975 by the University of Waterloo Senate to recognize excellence in teaching at all levels in the University. The Distinguished Teacher Award is given in recognition of a continued record of excellence in teaching at the University of Waterloo.

Four Distinguished Teachers are honoured each year. Three of the awards are designated for teachers who hold full-time faculty appointments. One award is for part-time faculty, teaching assistants, distance education tutor-markers, lab instructors, or those in similar teaching roles.

The 2011 winners:

  1. Mark Seasons, School of Planning (and Interim Dean of Environment)
  2. Vivian Dayeh, Department of Biology
  3. Steven Bednarski, History (St. Jerome's University)
  4. Ted McGee, English (St. Jerome's University)
