Academic support

Academic success is the key to a great university experience. Living in residence can be part of that success story. Residence offers an environment that supports academic achievement by encouraging mutual respect amongst residents, quiet hours after 11 pm on weeknights and 1 am on weekends, and many programs and services to help you academically.

Quiet hours

Getting a good sleep and having a quiet environment is important to help you stay focused. Each residence has quiet hours beginning at 11 p.m. on weeknights and 1 a.m. on weekends. During exam periods, quiet hours are extended to 23 hours per day.

Study For Success Sessions

Very similar to an athlete’s need for new training techniques and coaches to make it to the next level of fitness, students often need to adjust their study habits to maintain their success when they move up to the University level.

Attend a Study for Success workshop in residence and learn how to:

  • Manage everyday tasks using Google applications
  • Review notes so you can actually remember them
  • Set up the best study space for you
  • Adapt your study style according to your learning style

Study spaces

Each residence offers various study rooms and spaces that students can use. Some spaces are open for use 24 hours a day and others can be booked out at the residence front desk. These are great places to work on a group project or just to get away from distractions in your room.

The libraries also offer quiet study spaces. The Dana Porter Library and the Davis Centre library are both located walking distance from all residence communities.

Internet access

The Internet is an important tool in your academic achievement and enables you to check your email, view course web pages, download class notes, and do research. In addition to the ResNet internet access provided in each residence room, several residence buildings also have Internet cafés in the community centres. You will be able to access the Internet in these cafés using your University of Waterloo user name and password.
