Recommended Computer Configuration

99% of computers sold today meet the minimum requirements for connecting to ResNet.

To maximize your experience on our network, and avoid unnecessary slowdowns and frustration, you should choose a relatively modern computer with power to spare. If you're buying a new computer for use here in residence, any new computer on the market today should work great on the network.

If you're looking to purchase a new computer, visit the Campus Techshop and see what they have to offer.

Supported Operating Systems

ResNet officially only supports Windows XP/Vista/7, and MAC OS, however limited support is available for users of older Windows operating systems, as well as certain Linux distributions. In addition to these, ResNet also supports iOS / Android and the Blackberry platform.

If you don't have Windows XP, Vista or 7, you can download a copy, free of charge, from IST's website. This software is only available to registered UW students. You will only be able to download software from the IST site once your tuition payment has been processed (usually at the beginning of each term). You can sign in using your QUEST user ID and password once you get here to download the software.

The ResNet office has copies of each of the operating systems that can be signed out once you arrive. You will need to visit the IST site for a license before picking up the CD.

Please select the appropriate operating system and we'll walk you through the quick and easy setup instructions!

Ethernet Cards and Cables

You will need an Ethernet card and cable in order to connect to ResNet. Most new computers will have a built-in Ethernet card. If you don't have an ethernet card, you can borrow one (no charge) from your front desk when you arrive.

If you need an Ethernet cable to plug your computer into the network, you can also borrow one (no charge) from your front desk.

Tips on Getting Connected

  • If you are unable to connect, make sure you have tried a different cable. Ethernet cables are available for sign out at all front desks and the ResNet office.
  • Turn on your firewall, if it was turned off at an earlier date. All Windows PCs come with the firewall turned on by default.
  • Configure your TCP/IP settings. Make sure all your network settings are set to automatic. Refer to your guides above for more detailed instructions.
  • Restart your computer or disable/enable the connection to try again.
  • If the above suggestions don't work, please Contact us at the ResNet office.
