Audition requirements

Each ensemble has a term specific information sheet that you need to read for the one you are participating in. You will also be asked to fill out a Ensemble Student Form (PDF) each term. Copies can be printed from this page or they are also available on the bulletin board outside the music office (room 1104) a few weeks prior to the start of the term.

Note: registering for an ensemble on Quest does not mean the director knows you are intending to participate in a given term. You must audition (or if you are not required to audition, then you must notify the director directly).

If you do not pass the audition or are not asked back in the ensemble, you must drop the course on Quest yourself (if you registered in the first place) as this is not automatically done for you.

Ensembles: University Choir, Chamber Choir, Chapel Choir, Instrumental Chamber Ensembles, Stage Band and Vocal Techiques

University Choir

Arrive to your vocal interview warmed up ready to sing. Interview requires a brief set of vocal and aural exercises (range placement and pitch matching): no prepared piece is required. Bring with you the completed Ensemble Student Form (see above).

Chamber Choir (Fall and Winter terms only)

Students should arrive to their audition warmed up and ready to sing. The audition requires singing a series of vocal exercises and doing some sight-reading (no prepared piece is required). Bring with you the completed Ensemble Student Form (see above). All are required to re-audition for the Fall term, but only those who did not sing in the Fall need to audition for the Winter term.

Chapel Choir (Fall and Winter terms only)

Students should arrive to their audition warmed up and ready to sing. The audition requires singing a series of vocal exercises and doing some sight-reading (no prepared piece is required). Bring with you the completed Ensemble Student Form (see above). All are required to re-audition for the Fall term, but only those who did not sing in the Fall need to audition for the Winter term.

Instrumental Chamber Ensembles

Audition requirements: two contrasting pieces. Students will also be asked to read the information sheet before their audition. New students should bring a copy of their timetable (printed off Quest in grid format) to leave with the director at the audition along with a complete Ensemble Student Form (see above). Returning students do not need to re-audition, but must drop their timetable off in the Instrumental Chamber Ensembles folder under the music office bulletin board and indicate their intent to participate (no guarantee of returning) by signing up on the returning members sheet on the bulletin board outside the Music Office or email Ben Bolt-Martin. Quest will not notify the director.

Stage Band (Fall and Winter terms only)

Students should come with one prepared piece of any style to perform at their audition. Bring with you the completed Ensemble Student Form (see above).

Vocal Techniques (Fall term only)

No formal audition is required. Students interested in joining Vocal Techniques should sign-up on the sheet on the bulletin board outside of the music office and fill out the Ensemble Student Form (see above) to bring to the first class. All are welcome.
