WATERLOO, Ont. (Tuesday, November 19, 2013) – Professor Steve Manske is available to speak about the tabling of new legislation that would ban the sale of fruit-flavoured tobacco and prohibit smoking on playgrounds and sport fields in Ontario. The amendments will establish new protections for children and youth.

Professor Manske, a member of the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences at the University of Waterloo, is a senior scientist with the Propel Centre for Population Health Impact. Propel has been a driving force in lobbying for amendments through research on flavoured tobacco use and smoke-free environments and recently released findings on youth smoking of flavoured tobacco.

“The planned amendments are a big win for the health of Ontario youth. Propel’s studies show that without legislation that closes loopholes in tobacco product design, like eliminating flavours and that bans tobacco smoke from key outdoor spaces, Ontario will continue to pay the high cost of tobacco use in terms of lives lost and expenses in our health care system,” said Professor Manske.

Professor Manske can be reached by phone (519-888-4518), by email or by contacting the University of Waterloo media relations team.
