Professor Emmett Macfarlane from the University of Waterloo is available to speak to print and radio journalists on the new prostitution legislation, Bill C-36, being discussed by the House of Commons Justice Committee today.

The proposed bill cracks down on clients and pimps and includes new prohibitions on purchasing sex, advertising and public communication. According to Macfarlane, many of the provisions in the new bill raise the same set of concerns the Supreme Court addressed when striking down the old provisions last December.

“By prohibiting advertising and reviving the ban on public communication, the bill would make it much more difficult for sex workers to safely assess and vet their clients, and ensure they can meet them in relatively safe places on their own terms."

More than 60 experts and witnesses are expected to testify in front of the Committee over the next four days.
