Religious history of same-sex marriage: University of Waterloo expert
By Media RelationsProfessor Jeff Wilson of the Department of Religious Studies is available to talk about the religious history of same-sex marriage in North America.
Professor Wilson has conducted research on the faith-based marriage ceremonies for same-sex couples dating back to the 1950s in the United States and the 1970s in Canada.
“Many people assume that ministers would be against same-sex unions,” said Professor Wilson. "But some of them performed marriage ceremonies for couples long before there was any discussion of legalizing their unions in the eyes of the state."

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is co-ordinated within the Office of Indigenous Relations.
