University of Waterloo’s Professor Andrew Thompson is available to talk about the legal basis for military intervention in Syria.

Professor Andrew ThompsonProfessor Thompson is adjunct assistant professor of political science at the University of Waterloo, and the program officer for the global governance programs at the Balsillie School of International Affairs. He is a specialist in the fields of international human rights, civil society movements, and fragile states.

“Even without the use of chemical weapons, the Assad regime is guilty of crimes against humanity – an offence which is within the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court. There is also evidence that rebel groups have been responsible for mass atrocities,” said Professor Thimpson. “The UN Security Council must urgently refer the situation to the ICC so that a full and impartial investigation can take place. Otherwise, any military intervention could have the unintended consequence of making things much worse.”
