Why Public Health and Health Systems

globe sitting on top of puzzle pieces

  • A leading legacy. For over 35 years, we have been developing strategies to promote health and prevent disease, and have been bringing these discoveries to the classroom. In 2011, Waterloo's Department of Health Studies and Gerontology was transformed into a new School of Public Health and Health Systems dedicated to solving major, emerging health issues.
  • We see the big picture. We educate leaders –like Judy Kruger of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention–who develop strategies to improve the health of individuals and entire populations.
  • We're connected. You're learning from professors, like David Hammond, who also work with organizations like Health Canada, the Canadian Cancer Society, and the World Health Organization to identify and address health challenges relevant to Canada and countries around the world.
  • Prepare for success. In a recent survey, 97% of our new grads were working, enrolled in graduate or professional programs (e.g., medicine) or following other pursuits like volunteering after graduation. Our versatile program opens the doors to many rewarding careers.
