Stephanie Austin

Medical School student

Stephanie Austin chose the Health Studies program because it provided an opportunity to combine her strong interest in the sciences with social science courses like psychology. With the Health Studies program, there was no need to compromise!

This valuable skill-set also proved to be exceptional preparation for additional schooling - a Master's degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and more recently, medical school. "Medical school interviewers were impressed with the diverse background I had" she explains. Since undertaking her studies, she has also recognized other benefits as well. "My training in the pure sciences like biology and chemistry has been invaluable, as has my understanding of the social determinants of health, and the psychological principals of health behaviour change."

Why did she choose medicine? It provided the privilege of supporting people during important moments in their lives. "I'm so thankful that my job includes tasks like assisting in the birth of a child, reducing pain, and providing a listening ear," explains Stephanie.

Another perk of the program? She met her husband, Ben, a Health Studies graduate who is currently enrolled in Waterloo's pharmacy program. Their first date was in 4th year, and Ben and Stephanie were married just a couple of years later. Stephanie jokes "the Health Studies program attracts only the best guys around."
