Science Alumna wins 40 under 40 award

Photo of Linda Campbell by the lakeCongratulations to biology alumna Linda Campbell on being named as one of the Globe and Mail's Top 40 Under 40 Canadian Leaders. Dr. Campbell holds a PhD from Waterloo, is the Canada Research Chair in aquatic ecosystem health at Queen's University. Her research examines how contaminants are transferred through the environment and studies biological communities to help us better understand how ecosystems function in lakes.

Periodic table student contest

In celebration of the 2011 International Year of Chemistry,Photo of the periodic table  Chem13 News will be offering a periodic table project for students at any grade level. Starting June 1, teachers are asked to register their class for an element. Each class will create a unique full-colour elemental tile accompanied with a 100-word description of the design.

After all element tiles are collected, they will be displayed at Waterloo and each participating school will receive a free poster of the finished project.

Building life: The Science of synthetic biology

Synthetic life artPlease join the Department of Biology on June 23rd, 2010 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. for a thought provoking public lecture and panel discussion on the incredible announcement of the creation of synthetic life. Waterloo's Dr. Trevor Charles will discuss Craig Venter's controversal creation of the first synthetic fully functioning bacterial cell. The lecture and panel discussion will take place on Waterloo campus in the J.R. Coutts Hall, room 302
