Math preparedness

Many Science students find first-year Mathematics (Calculus 1 - MATH 127) a challenge and that is why we hold a Mathematics preparedness test during your first tutorial on Monday, September 12. In recent years, we have seen approximately 20% of Science students fail first-year Calculus on the first attempt. There is also a significant number of students that "just pass" with grades in the 50's leaving them unprepared for the challenges of Calculus 2 (MATH 128) as well as the demands of senior Science classes.

All students registered in MATH 127 will write this preparedness test from 5:30 - 6:50 pm in their assigned tutorial section as listed on Quest.

The results of this preparedness test will not be used to calculate your final grade in this course. Its sole purpose is to ascertain whether you will require additional help in topics that are covered in your first year of study.

Sample questions and selected solutions.

If you are registered in Calculus 1 - MATH 137 (Mathematical Physics students only) - you will write a different preparedness test - specific for MATH 137. It is also held on Monday, September 12, but is online. Details will be provided during your first MATH 137 lecture on September 12, but you will have a block of time in the late-afternoon and evening, 3:00-9:00pm EDT to complete the test (plan for 75 minutes) on MapleTA - the online testing and assignment interface used by the Faculty of Mathematics.

Your success is important to us.
