Waterloo Science Endowment Fund

Each term every full-time undergraduate student in science has a $50 Waterloo Science Endowment Fund (WatSEF) refundable, and tax deductible, donation added to their fee statement. The money collected is deposited into an endowment fund such that only the interest is spent on lab equipment purchases.

WatSEF is a student initiative that was enacted after a referendum in 1991 when 84.4% of Science Students voted in favour of instituting the $50 refundable fee. Staff, Faculty, and Alumni also contribute to WatSEF, and the endowment principal now stands at $2.5 million resulting in $100,000 available to spend on lab equipment in 2005-06. The Board of Directors, the majority of whom are students, approve all funding requests.
