For Ashwini Namasivayam, being in the science and business program allows her to experience the best of both worlds.
The science and business program helps you develop a good foundation,” Ashwini says. “I like the diverse set of skills you can build and knowing that you can apply those skills in the work force.”

Ashwini’s enthusiasm for her program has certainly been noticed by her classmates. Last year, Ashwini was presented with the Leadership Award, given to a science and business student who has demonstrated leadership within the program. “Considering the award is based on nominations by your peers, it was a great honour to be recognized as a student leader,” she says. “The award definitely serves as motivation to keep up the hard work.”
Though her program keeps her busy, Ashwini finds time for extra-curricular activities at Waterloo. She is the lead ambassador for the science and business program, volunteers at the Early Childhood Education Centre, and ran the Fusion conference for science and business students last year.
You have a much more enriching experience if you get involved at school,” Ashwini says.
Ashwini’s volunteerism has also taken her beyond Waterloo’s campus. This past reading week, Ashwini spent her time volunteering in Nicaragua.
I was working on a school improvement project for mentally and physically disabled children,” she says. “I have travelled widely, but this was a very eye-opening experience.”
Through her multiple volunteer efforts with children, Ashwini believes she’s found her future career path.
I would like to obtain my Master’s in speech-language pathology and I would eventually like to open my own speech pathology clinic.”
