Student profile: Julia Chelaru

When science and business student Julia Chelaru applied for the Suncor Emerging Leaders Award before arriving at Waterloo, she did not realize the impact it would have on her future.

Not only has the award eased some of my financial burden, it has also provided me with an internship opportunity with Suncor Energy Incorporated,” she says.

The Suncor Emerging Leaders Award program was established to help address Canada’s growing labour needs and to aid postsecondary students in disciplines related to Suncor’s business, such as business, geology, geophysics and environmental earth sciences. The award is given to students in their first or second year of study and, conditional on meeting annual requirements, will be given in subsequent years until graduation.

Julia is confident her science and business degree and experience with Suncor will take her career far.

With my science background, I could apply for medical school, and with a business background, I could go to law school or obtain my MBA. My program will help open as many doors as possible.”
