Science and business student Navena Swaminathan has put her skills to good use thanks to an incredible co-op term with Suncor Energy Inc.
I have been working on value-added projects that have been recognized by senior management and contributed to the company’s success,” Navena says. “Working for an oil, gas and lubricants company has allowed me to understand the science of the product and how it must be marketed and sold effectively in the business world.”
Navena was able to secure her co-op position as one of the recipients of Suncor’s Emerging Leaders Award in 2008. The awards program was established to help address Canada’s growing labour needs and to aid post-secondary students in disciplines such as business, geology, geophysics and environmental earth sciences, which are some of the areas related to Suncor’s business. In addition to the award, Suncor develops ongoing relationships with awardees to support them with mentorship and co-op work opportunities.
Suncor has provided me with countless opportunities to visit other offices, labs and refineries, and connected me with employee mentors who are interested in the capability development of university students,” Navena says.
With strong work experience and a unique, interdisciplinary degree, Navena believes she is well prepared for the future.
Waterloo will educate and train me to become a graduate with high potential value and a wide variety of skills that can be applied to any organization.”
