Professor Emeritus

Alan Kempton, William Inniss, and Colin Mayfield were the founders of the microbiology specialization at the University of Waterloo. These three academics were highly regarded as professors and researchers who had the ability to see the potential in students. All three devoted much time to develop, promote and support students onto their eventual career paths such as academia, research, law and business. To celebrate and honour these men, and to help the future of microbiology by helping today’s students, alumni and friends have set out to establish The Founders of Microbiology Graduate Award.

Photo of Joan P. Torrie “Like many of you, I was once one of those financially-challenged students who worked two jobs to get through university. Dr. Mayfield, Dr. Inniss, and Dr. Kempton  championed the co-op biology program introduced into Biology in my first year. The Waterloo biology co-op was the first co-op biology degree program in Canada. Being part of that program helped with my immediate costs and gave me an early exposure to what a Waterloo biology degree could offer.  But without the high calibre innovative teaching and mentoring provided by the faculty, I would have not succeeded.”

This award is to honour these scholars. A committee has been formed, co-chaired by Dr. Mayfield and Dr. Torrie to raise contributions specifically for this endowment fund which will provide a graduate award valued up to $6,000 a year to talented graduate students who have financial challenges.

The need for student aid is greater than ever. The annual cost of books, tuition and living expenses ranges from $16,400 to $24,700 for the average undergraduate student, and is even greater for graduate and international students. Along with providing financial aid, scholarships help recruit and retain bright students, recognize achievements, and reward talented students.

Dr. Torrie and Dr. Mayfield have each made a personal commitment to this scholarship, and would like to count on you for your support. As science alumni, please consider a gift to help reach our alumni goal of $200,000.
