Geoff Fong, a professor of psychology in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Waterloo, has been awarded a World No Tobacco Day Award by the Pan American Health Organization and World Health Organization. Fong, who is cross-appointed to Waterloo's School of Public Health and Health Systems, is the founder and lead researcher of the International Tobacco Control Policy Evaluation Project (ITC). It is the only international research program that is evaluating the effectiveness of tobacco control policies of the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. The ITC Project is an enormous research collaboration with more than 100 researchers across 23 countries. “His efforts have made a significant difference in advancing the fight against one of the leading preventable causes of death in the world,” a WHO press release stated.
