Financing your study abroad

In order to determine if you can afford going on an exchange, consider the following:

  • currency abroad in comparison to the Canadian dollar
  • living expenses abroad on a one term or month-by-month basis (e.g. housing, food, books/supplies, transportation/airfare, etc.); most host institutions provide an overview of approximate costs on their websites, research this information through the country-specific links

Tuition fees

Your tuition fees will be assessed at the University of Waterloo for the respective term abroad. It is your responsibility to pay your tuition fees by the applicable Student Accounts term deadline in order to avoid late penalty fees. The process for paying your tuition fees remains the same as it would for any other academic term at Waterloo.

Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP)

Students participating in an exchange are registered as full-time students at Waterloo. Therefore, if you are currently eligible to receive OSAP, then you will continue to be eligible to receive OSAP for your exchange term(s) abroad. Please refer to the OSAP Instruction Sheet (pdf) for more information. Questions regarding OSAP should be directed to the Student Awards & Financial Aid Office.

Scholarships

There are several scholarships available for outgoing exchange students that are administered through the Student Awards & Financial Aid Office. View a list of international experience scholarships. Questions regarding these scholarships should be directed to the Student Awards & Financial Aid Office.
