How to apply
In order to go abroad on an exchange, you must be nominated by the Study Abroad Manager after selection by your Faculty Exchange Representative.
For Asia/Australasia/Americas/Turkey/UK:
Andreea Ciucurita
Waterloo International, NH 1101, Room 1103 ext. 35995
For Europe/Iceland/Israel/Scandinavia:
Maria Lango
Waterloo International, NH 1101, Room 1113 ext. 33999
First and foremost it is time to decide where you want to go. To help you make your decision, consider questions such as:
- What part of the world seems exciting and interesting to you?
- Do you want to be in a larger city or smaller community?
- What are the semester dates abroad (note that many schools abroad do not operate on the same term dates as Waterloo)?
- What courses are offered at the institution abroad that are of interest to you?
- Which destination is most affordable for you (consider the currencies abroad in relation to the Canadian dollar)?
Application process
There are several steps you need to follow:
1. Research the partner institutions abroad, their programs, semester dates, and course availability. Use the current year’s online course descriptions if future course offerings are not yet available for the term you need. Changes can be made later on.
2. Apply through your Faculty Exchange Representative for academic pre-approval and assessment of your transfer credits. Each faculty has a Faculty Exchange Representative and a faculty exchange application form.

Note:
- For the consortia programs (OMG, OJS, OBW, ORA, MICEFA), please contact the appropriate Study Abroad Manager as soon as possible.
- In the case of Australia and New Zealand, the January 15 deadline applies to the Winter and Fall terms of the following year. Spaces for these destinations are very limited, so placements are processed/confirmed much earlier in advance. Any remaining availability for Australia and New Zealand will be filled on a first come basis following this date, pending faculty academic approval.
- For exchanges taking place in the Winter of the following year, applications will still be accepted until May 31. However, it is likely that space at many partner universities for the Winter term of the following year will be more limited at that time.
