While abroad
Your Study Abroad Manager and Faculty Exchange Representative are ready to help you if you have questions or concerns while you are abroad. These scenarios may include cross-cultural conflict or personal safety issues, progarm issues/course changes, extending or shortening your stay.
Course changes
While on exchange you are bound by the host univerity's policies and procedures regarding course changes. It is fairly common that students may add/drop courses at the beginning of the semester. If you need to make changes to the courses that were pre-approved by your faculty, you should contact your faculty exchange representative as soon as possible in order to have the new course(s) approved.
Extending your stay
Once abroad, you may decide that you wish to extend your stay for another term. Before talking to the host institution, you should contact your Study Abroad Manager to determine if this is possible. If your request is approved, the Study Abroad Manager will contact the host institution on your behalf to make the necessary arrangements.
Shortening your stay
While you are abroad, if for any reason you feel that you need to return home early, you should contact the Study Abroad Manager and your Faculty Exchange Representative immediately to discuss your situation and options.
Emergency assistance
In the event of an emergency, the University of Waterloo Police is accessible 24 hours a day (519-888-4911). It is also important that you familiarize yourself with the local emergency protocols for your host institution and region (e.g. local fire, police, ambulance, hospital services). In the event of a large-scale emergency, you should contact the nearest Canadian (or your own country's) consulate/embassy.
