Student mobility programs

Students for Development (SFD) program at Waterloo

The Students for Development Program at Waterloo is a multi-year student mobility project coordinated by the Faculty of Environment. The project supports students in the International Development and Master of Development Practice programs to complete their field placements with partner institutions in Vietnam, Rwanda, Senegal, China, Brazil, South Africa, Malawi, Ghana, India, Bangladesh, or Peru. Additionally, Waterloo will host a select number of visiting graduate students from the partner institutions on an annual basis.    

The SFD program is administered by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada and is made possible with the financial support of the Government of Canada through the Canadian International Development Agency. The Canadian Bureau of International Education (CBIE) administers Graduate Research Scholarships to foreign students to conduct research in Canada:

Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship Program (CCSP)

Students from Commonwealth Countries can receive a scholarship of up to $10,000 for five/six months as a visiting graduate research scholar under the supervision of a Waterloo faculty member. The scholarship covers transportation, living and other related expenses. Applications are due in April and Waterloo International staff must apply on behalf of the student.  

Emerging Leaders of the Americas Program (ELAP)

Students from the Americas can receive a scholarship of up to $10,000 for five/six months as a visiting graduate research scholar under the supervision of a Waterloo faculty member. The scholarship covers transportation, living and other related expenses. Applications are due in April and Waterloo International staff must apply on behalf of the student.  

Canada-CARICOM Leadership Scholarships Program

Students from member states of the Caribbean Community can receive a scholarship of up to $10,000 for five/six months as a visiting graduate research scholar under the supervision of a Waterloo faculty member. The scholarship covers transportation, living and other related expenses. Applications are due in April and Waterloo International staff must apply on behalf of the student.  

Canada-Chile Leadership Exchange Scholarship Program

Students from Chile can receive a scholarship of up to $10,000 for five/six months as a visiting graduate research scholar under the supervision of a Waterloo faculty member. The scholarship covers transportation, living and other related expenses. Applications are due in April and Waterloo International staff must apply on behalf of the student.

Leif Transatlantic Exchange Partnership Project

“A Multicultural Exploration into Research and Education for Surface Computing” is a multi-year project coordinated by Waterloo’s Collaborative Systems Laboratory.  The project allows students to establish international networks and work in a new environment while exploring the interactive surface computing sector at institutions located in Canada or Europe. To ensure quick adaption into a new environment, a “buddy” system is implemented where students at the host institution act as mentors to incoming students, allowing for instant connections and guidance upon arrival.  Questions can be directed to Jennifer Calbery, International Programs Manager.
