Visiting scholars

Waterloo is pleased to host scholars in each of our six faculties.  We have procedures for three types of visiting scholars:

Visiting Student of Faculty Research Scholars (non-credit)

Scholars (undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral fellows, or faculty) working in areas of mutual interest are approved on a case by case basis by individual departments or research centres.  Scholars are responsible for travel and living costs, Waterloo's mandatory health insurance plan, and any other miscellaneous costs. No administration or tuition fees are required.

Questions can be directed to Jennifer Calbery, International Programs Manager.

Visiting Graduate Students (non-degree)

Many factors are taken into consideration for graduate studies admissions.  Most importantly, your previous academic record: courses taken, degree received, overall standing, etc.  Other factors include: reference letters, research area, supervisor availability, funding availability, lab space, etc.  International tuition fees apply.

Once you have found a specific program that you are interested in, please contact potential supervisors and the department(s) directly for specific admission questions.  More information is available through the Graduate Studies Office

Application inquiries should be directed to: Jeanette Nugent, Associate Director, Recruitment and Admissions.

Visiting Undergraduate Students (non-degree)

Where no formal Student Exchange Agreement exists, undergraduate students may study at Waterloo on a Letter of Permission.  You would be required to meet our standard minimum admission requirements, including English language proficiency, and pay international tuition fees plus incidentals.  Pre-requisites must be met and course availability may be limited or restricted.  Students are advised to meet with their home university advisor to assist in course selection and determine if Waterloo pre-requisites can be met.  Please note that undergraduate studies does not provide a research component.

Application inquiries should be directed to the Registrar’s Office.
