The Foundations for Academic Success project aspires to improve student engagement with academic material by exploring mobile learning to better resonate with the current student population.

Objectives are to develop strategies for enhancing student academic integrity (AI) knowledge and understanding by employing open access mobile technology with an innovative pedagogical approach.

Research will support the development, administration, and assessment of the Foundations for Academic Success academic integrity mobile learning (FAS) tool that explores best strategies, from a student user perspective, for accessing, delivering, assessing, and learning this information with mobile technology.

Academic integrity content in this mobile application extends beyond its utility to University of Waterloo students as the values it promotes apply provincially, nationally and internationally. Open-access mobile application has the potential to be adopted and used across many post-secondary colleges and universities.

Background:

Post-secondary institutions often struggle to identify what is the best pedagogical approach to engage students with Academic Integrity (AI) content. Most universities rely on instructors to cover this information; however, the consistency and quality of the delivery of this information varies. Academic integrity resources and policies are widely posted across post-secondary institution websites, but this information tends to be static and not engaging.

There is a need for further research in academic integrity, in order to  determine the best pedagogical approach that will resonate with the current generation of university learners.


An earlier project using mobile learning (m-learning) developed and implemented by Dr. Alice Schmidt Hanbidge, Dr. Nicole Sanderson and Tony Tin, was the inspiration for the FAS format. Details of this research project are listed below:

RENMIL

The Mobile Information Literacy (MIL) Project is a mobile technology user-friendly literacy interface for use by Renison students to hone their information literacy skills during coursework and future employment opportunities. The objectives are to develop strategies for enhancing student information literacy skills through mobile technology (m-learning). This project will support the design and development of the MIL Tool and explore the best strategies for delivering and accessing learning content on mobile devices. We anticipate that Renison and its community based partners will benefit from student's enhanced abilities in accessing web-based information to complete academic assignments, research projects and field placements.
