Watching the earth move

Brittany at the seismic station

Seismically monitoring an active volcano in Spain? That's last thing I thought I was going to do when I first started at the University of Waterloo five years ago!

Whenever the choice for a new opportunity crops up, I always ask which option scares me most. And that's the one I choose. This has been the fundamental question I ask myself every term when choosing a co-op job, and it led me to my recent position as a seismology intern in Europe.

Writing My Mother

Bird-Bent Grass by Kathleen Venema

Five years before I arrived at the University of Waterloo to begin my MA in Language and Professional Writing (as it was then called), I moved to Ndejje, a small town in south-central Uganda that I would call home for the next three years. I was 25 years old, had taught junior high school in northern Manitoba for the previous three years, and was now a volunteer with the Mennonite Central Committee. My official assignment was to teach science and mathematics to young adults at a nationally acclaimed teacher-training college that had been devastated in the recently-ended civil war.

Dear 18-Year-Old Me

Emma in the House of Commons

That’s a wrap! After five years at the University of Waterloo, I am saying my goodbyes and moving on. I know people will tell you that your time at university will fly by, but you won’t believe them. In the middle of exam season, your time in school will seem endless. But let me tell you, life has a way of sneaking up on you, and before you know it, you’ll be walking across the stage at convocation.

A Reflection of My UWaterloo Experience as Convocation Approaches

When I first started my journey at the University of Waterloo five years ago, I was 18-years-old and had no idea what I wanted to do with my life.

University of Waterloo Olympian Encourages Fellow Students and Alumni to Get Behind the Canada Games

Olympian Mandy Bujold with a #WeRally2021 sign

I have been involved in many battles over the years since I started boxing at the age of 16, but my current battle is one of the fiercest yet. I am a two-time Pan Am Games champion and have won the Canadian National Boxing Title ten times. For the past several months I have been juggling my third year liberal arts studies to try to give back to the community that has supported me in numerous ways.

Share your passion for fashion, one Pout at a time

Recent graduate, Riley Donelson (BASc, Systems Design Engineering ’14), shares with us his journey after Waterloo into the startup world. Based out of the Velocity Garage, his company Pout has already changed the face of beauty and fashion, and he is passionate to continue doing just that.

1)      Can you tell us about Pout and what the company is all about?

Making an impact with UWaterloo on a Habitat for Humanity Canada Builds project

Sometime in the Fall of 2013, I heard about an opportunity for faculty, staff, and alumni to travel as a group to Whitehorse, Yukon the following summer to work on a Habitat for Humanity Canada Builds project the following summer. In August 2014, I found myself on a plane across the country, ready to do just that on the first annual Waterloo Habitat for Humanity trip.

What I learned from Alumni Relations

I am a fourth year Therapeutic Recreation student and I am currently on my last co-op term working for Alumni Relations.
