The Medli Award and the Mystery behind a Good Novel

Portrait of Susan

In early April of this year I received the inaugural Medli Award for my second mystery novel “True Image” – a story that brings together a portrait artist and an autistic child to solve a murder.

Oh the places you’ll go!

I still remember the very first day I worked at UWaterloo’s convocation. I had just wrapped up a co-op term at the Registrar’s Office and was provided with the opportunity to usher during the Spring 2012 convocation ceremonies.

Collecting the Ghosts of Waterloo and Staging our Memories

Robet Motum

In preparing this post, I have read dozens of other alumni contributions to this site. If this blog is any proof, we all have fond memories and sentimental stories which we have carried with us since our time at the University of Waterloo; stories which have, somehow, shaped who we have become.  As a theatre artist and researcher, I have a love of stories.

I’ve always enjoyed the company of kids, appreciating their openness and general silliness. A career of local music-making

Inspired by Waterloo Professor, Teacher Shares Passion for Physical Dialogue

Artistic Director of KW Glee Leads Choir to National Victory

Alumni Relations had the opportunity to ask alumna Amanda Kind (BA ’06, Music) about her role as Artistic Director for KW Glee. The youth pop choir of 112 combined local teenagers who just won the title of Show Choir Canada and performed three sold-out shows this June.

In your role as Artistic Director for KW Glee, what are some of your main responsibilities?

Becoming a Life-long Learner

The Arts department was an experimental and exciting place in the early 1970's. Experiential Human Relations courses, my psychology courses, and the student run volunteer counseling program  in the campus centre, The Rap Room, set me on course to a highly satisfying and successful career in clinical Social Work.

Answering the age-old question “What do you do with an arts degree?"

I still remember the wave of panic that washed over me three weeks before the end of my final term at Waterloo. The age-old question “what do you do with an arts degree?” hung over my head, and seemed to be amplified into a terrifying “what do you do with a Sexuality, Marriage and Family Studies degree?” to which I had no answer.
