Anabaptist Learning Workshop

Our purpose

The Anabaptist Learning Workshop (ALW) creates learning opportunities for those who want to explore the intersection of Anabaptist-Christian faith and contemporary life. The Anabaptist Learning Workshop offers:

  • Learning opportunities for both laypeople and pastors
  • A participatory and experiential approach to education
  • Workshops offered in various locations within Mennonite Church Eastern Canada
  • Certificate (for those who choose this option)
  • Variety of instructors including practitioners, professors, and seasoned facilitators
  • Resources for intercultural learning

Why start a program like this?

In general, conventional academic programs are not accessible for some – e.g. new Canadian pastors whose credentials are not transferable, or those who do not have enough time or money to enroll in extended academic programs. As well, conventional academic programs are not attractive for some– e.g. those who have given up on church, those who are turned off by formal theological-biblical training, or church lay leaders who are looking for focused training in a particular area.

Brief history

In 2013, Mennonite Church Eastern Canada (MCEC) and Conrad Grebel University College (CGUC) formed an initial partnership to develop a non-formal educational program. One year later, a program developer was hired, and an ad-hoc steering committee began to generate the initial conceptual framework, facilitate curricular design, and coordinate the necessary logistics for launching the program. In 2015, both MCEC and CGUC approved the Anabaptist Learning Workshop program and agreed on a September 2015 launch, with MCEC providing the bulk of the funding, and GCUC providing the bulk of the administrative support. The first series of ALW workshops began in the fall of 2015.
