Remote Access to SPSS and NVivo (Mac)

This page and video will lead you through the steps to set up your Mac computer to run NVivo and SPSS in Applied Health Studies.

Initial setup - Microsoft Remote Desktop

  1. Search the App Store for "Microsoft Remote Desktop". Make sure you install the latest version (Remote Desktop 10)
  2. Sign in to your Apple account to complete the download (if prompted)

To use files on your computer, you need to set it up in Microsoft Remote Desktop first

  1. Start the Microsoft Remote Desktop app from the Applications folder

  2. Open the Preferences for the Microsoft Remote Desktop app
  3. Set the folder redirection option at the bottom of the General tab
  4. Select a folder on your computer that you want visible in the remote application. The "Home" folder with your name under "Users" is the recommended choice.
  5. Quit and Restart the Microsoft Remote Desktop application

Initial setup - download the connection files

Using a web browser, download the connection file(s) for the program(s) you want to use. Control-Click on link below, and "Download Linked File as" and save to your desktop or copy the .rdp file(s) from the downloads folder to your desktop:

  1. SPSS.rdp
  2. NVivo.rdp

Note that you only need to do the download once.

Using NVivo

  1. To start NVivo, double-click on the icon on the desktop
  2. Use your UW UserID with nexus\ in front as the User Name and use your UW password
  3. Click Done and wait for the application to start

Using SPSS

  1. To start SPSS, double-click on the icon on the desktop
  2. Use your UW UserID with nexus\ in front as the User Name and use your UW password
  3. Click Done and wait for the application to start

Opening Files

  1. To open a file, click on the computer icon that starts with "VDI" to reveal file locations
  2. Your computer folders will appear in the list with your folder name "on a computer name"
  3. Your UW network storage (10GB) will appear in the list as an "N:" drive with your UserID
