Remote Access to SPSS and NVivo (Windows)

This page and video will lead you through the steps to set up your Windows computer to run NVivo and SPSS in Applied Health Studies.

Initial setup - Download the Connection files

Using a web browser, download the connection file(s) for the program(s) you want to use. Right-click on the link below and "Save Link as" and save to your desktop or copy the .rdp file(s) from the downloads folder to your desktop:

  1. SPSS.rdp
  2. NVivo.rdp

Note that you only need to do the download once.

Using NVivo

  1. To start NVivo, double-click on the NVivo program icon that you copied/downloaded to your desktop.
  2. When prompted for a username and password, choose "More Choices"
  3. Then choose "Use a different account"
  4. Enter your UW UserID with nexus\ in front and use your UW password
  5. Check the "Remember Me" option and Click OK

Please see important note on how to end your remote session correctly in order to avoid losing work.

    Using SPSS

    1. To start SPSS, double-click on the SPSS program icon that you copied/downloaded to your desktop.
    2. If prompted for username, choose "More choices"
    3. Then choose "Use a different account"
    4. Enter your UW UserID with nexus\ in front and use your UW password
    5. Check the "Remember Me" option and Click OK

    Opening Files

    To open a file, click on the computer icon that starts with "VDI" to reveal file locations

    • Your UW network storage (10GB) will appear as an "N:" drive with your UserID
    • Your local files will be stored in a Users folder on the "C: on computername" drive
