Alumni Achievement Award 2014 - Ami Richter

An entrepreneur who is committed to giving back

An innovative entrepreneur and industry leader, Recreation and Leisure Studies graduate Ami Richter would describe herself as “just a regular gal”. But with a knack for design, a passion for giving back to the community, and Orprah Winfrey and Wayne Gretsky among her many fans, Ami has proven she is far from ordinary.

After graduating from the University of Waterloo in 2001, Ami and her future husband, Jason, launched Lug – a travel accessory company that blended fashion with function. Since its inception, the company has grown from a handful of travel bags to an impressive line of products for active living that are regularly seen in the hands of celebrities and public figures.

A firm believer in giving back, Ami is dedicated to building meaningful relationships with partners and charitable organizations. Her efforts annually raise over one million dollars for children’s charities including The Children’s Aid Foundation, Sick Kids, The Andy Roddick Foundation and the Jays Care Foundation.

Since her graduation, Ami has remained connected to UWaterloo. From speaking at the 2013 TEDxUW event, designing custom Lug items for the university to hiring UWaterloo co-op students, Ami never hesitates to make a difference. Ami is a true innovator in her profession and exemplifies the leadership characteristics that the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences is proud to celebrate.
