Alumni talk: "It's about the science, stupid"Export this event to calendar

Wednesday, November 8, 2017 — 11:30 AM to 12:20 PM EST

The Faculty of Applied Health Sciences presents a talk by:

2017 Alumni Achievement Award recipient,

Patrick Brill-Edwards, BSc, MD, MSc, FACP, FRCP(C)

Dr. Patrick Brill-Edwards

Dr. Patrick Brill-Edwards (BSc '79, KIN) enrolled at the University of Waterloo in 1975, aspiring to become a high school teacher and basketball coach. Four years later, due largely to accessible and dynamic faculty, he took a broader view of health science and then public health. Albeit slow to become personally invested in research, he eventually built on lessons from the years at Waterloo which led to success as a clinical investigator and medical educator.

The second half of his career has been spent in public health, specifically vaccine development, including Gardasil – the vaccine against human papillomavirus (HPV).

In his talk, Dr. Brill-Edwards will discuss aspects of Gardasil’s initial development and the on-going tension between the science and the pseudo-science of its implementation. A question & answer period will follow.

Learn more about how 2017 Alumni Achievement Award recipient, Dr. Patrick Brill-Edwards, is leading a new conversation, including in sexual health and disease prevention, which will inspire the next generation of health leaders to make other transformative impacts towards a healthier world for all.
