Colleagues,
Over the last year we’ve marked several notable milestones as a Faculty: record levels of student enrolment and research funding, the opening of the Applied Health Sciences AHS Expansion Building, and the release of our first Impact Report. As 2016 comes to a close, I’d like to thank each and every one of you for helping to make these accomplishments a reality. Whether in a lab, classroom or office, the contributions of our faculty, staff and students are the pillar of our collective success. Thank you making AHS a remarkable place to work and learn.
I also want to acknowledge that, like all things worth doing, there are challenges associated with these accomplishments. On behalf of the leadership team, I can assure you of our ongoing awareness and collaboration in order to put in place what is needed to accommodate the evolution of the Faculty.

Before we shut down for the holiday break, there are just a few notable announcements:
- A reminder that our facilities will be closed over the holiday break. The outside doors to BMH/LHS/LHN/AHS Expansion Building will be locked at 5 p.m. on December 23 and reopened at 7:30 a.m. on January 3, 2017. If there is some reason that you need to enter the building over the holidays, you may sign out a key from the UW Police.
- Starting in January, the Murray Alzheimer Research and Education Program will host a three-part brown bag lunch series on dementia and dementia care. Sponsored by the Staff Excellence Fund, the 90-minute workshops aim to provide members of the campus community with a better understanding of the disease and strategies to enhance care practices and reduce caregiver stress. Registration is required.
- Look for the 2016 issue of News to You in your mailbox over the holiday break and/or through the e-blast on January 4. This year’s theme, AHS relationships and health, was chosen to reinforce the importance of our relationships with alumni and donors and celebrate the multi-dimensional relationships between research, community and technology that impact health and well-being. I am delighted with this year’s publication, especially how the cover story illustrates the theme through the activities at the new Toby Jenkins Applied Health Research Building. Wanda Deschamps, Director of Advancement, hopes you will contact her with your comments, questions and feedback on this issue.
