Ron Schlegel has made this region a better place
Ron Schlegel would like to be known as a social entrepreneur.
“I am first and foremost a businessman, who tries to build social capital. I see money not as an object or goal, but as a resource.” Ron says. “I’m always trying to build neighbourhoods, not just putting in streets, but building social interaction.”
We think Ron is an extraordinary community builder and have chosen him to receive our 2011 Barnraiser Award, recognizing outstanding achievement and commitment to community.
Ron gives back to the community through his philanthropy, businesses and vision. He always has time to offer advice or guidance to those who seek it. “I’m interested in how people relate to each other,” he says.
Those interactions can be seen in his Schlegel Villages retirement communities. His vision can be seen in his generous donation to create a long-term care facility at the University of Waterloo. It’s a partnership between private and public bodies that will include a health-care centre, assisted living and an independent living area, run by the Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging.
...Susan Elliott, UW’s dean of applied health sciences, counts Ron among her friends. “Ron is a genuine, humble community servant who put — and continues to put — virtually everyone before himself,” she says.
