To Jeff Payne, soccer is more than a way of life; it’s a way to make a living.
The Recreation and Business grad is living his dream working for Toronto FC, Canada’s first Major League Soccer team. And Jeff says he has Waterloo’s innovative program, which combined his passion for sport and business, to thank.
Jeff chose Waterloo because the Recreation and Leisure Studies department had such a strong reputation, but the real clincher was the school’s top-tier varsity soccer program. Both in the classroom and on the field, Jeff developed valuable leadership skills. He also explored what makes great organizational cultures work and how to foster leadership excellence.
His hours on the varsity team also paid off when it came to building his career. He learned how to lead groups and work together toward a common goal.
“The parallels between sport and business are virtually endless.”
Today, he works for Toronto FC in Corporate Partner Service & Activation, working with corporate partners to develop effective marketing programs that allow them to stand out in the crowd. It’s challenging work, but meeting his client’s needs is always Jeff’s goal. “It can be incredibly hectic at times and the hours can be long, but we are constantly driven to deliver on our partner’s objectives.”
