SUMMARY:Applied Math Colloquium | Arezoo Ardekani\, Swimming and settling i
 n\ndensity stratified fluids
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Many aquatic environments are characterized by regions where wa
ter\ndensity varies over depth\, often due to temperature or salinity\ngra
dients. These ‘pycnoclines’ are associated with intense\nbiological ac
tivity and can affect carbon fluxes by slowing the\ndescent of particles.
We explore the effects of stratification on the\nfundamental hydrodynamics
  of settling particles\, rising drops\, and\nsmall organisms.
