SUMMARY:Graduate Student Seminar | Nico Castro-Folker\, Gravity currents: w
hat\nthey are and what they do
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Gravity currents are motions within a fluid driven by a horizon
tal\nchange in density. They are ubiquitous in nature\, with phenomena as\
ndisparate as drafts under doors and lava flows all serving as\nexamples.
In this talk I will discuss geophysical examples of gravity\ncurrents\, fo
cusing on winter lakes and coastal oceans. In these\ncontexts\, gravity cu
rrents transport heat\, nutrients\, and pollutants\,\nand are even respons
ible for the creation of off-shore geological\nfeatures. I will also discu
 ss lab-scale\, three-dimensional numerical\nsimulations used to understand
the processes that govern the\ngeophysical examples. This talk will focus
on qualitative results and\nvisualizations of gravity currents\, so previ
ous knowledge of fluid\nmechanics is neither expected or required.
