DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT \nThe simulation of flows using computational fluid dy
 namics (CFD) has\nadvanced considerably in recent decades and is now an es
 sential tool\nacross industries ranging from aerospace design to process\n
 engineering. Although CFD is relatively mature for single-phase flows\,\nm
 ultiphase flows (such as particle-laden flows) and multiphysics flows\n(su
 ch as those including microwaves or ultrasound) remain\nsignificantly more
  challenging to simulate\, in part due to their\nintrinsic multiscale natu
 re and conflicting numerical need.\n\nIn the recent years\, high-order met
 hods have gained considerable\nmomentum in aeronautics\, in part due to th
 eir significantly lower\ndispersion and dissipation\, but also for their h
 igher arithmetic\nintensity (FLOPS-to-byte ratio) which suits current hard
 ware\ncapabilities. However\, these methods remain seldomly used in\nchemi
 cal-engineering applications\, in part due to their multiphase and\nmultip
 hysics nature.\n\nThis talk presents our efforts in designing Lethe\, an o
 pen-source\,\nhigh-order multiphysics framework for single- and multiphase
  flows\nbuilt on the deal.II library. We first motivate the use of high-or
 der\nfinite elements for CFD applications in process engineering. Then\, w
 e\npresent three cases that illustrate the role that these novel\ncomputat
 ional can play in simulating turbulent flows\, particle-laden\nflows and m
 icrowave intensified process. We conclude by drawing some\nconclusions on 
 the potential of these methods\n\nWe conclude by reflecting on the role of
  open-source software in\ndeveloping accurate and efficient simulation too
 ls\, and some of the\nlessons learned during the development of Lethe. Fin
 ally\, we outline\nfuture directions for this work\, including the integra
 tion of\nAI-driven surrogate model as part of the design of unit operation
 s.\n\nBIOGRAPHY\nDr. Bruno Blais\, PEng\, PhD\, is an Professor at the Dep
 artment of\nChemical Engineering at Polytechnique Montreal. Before this\, 
 he was a\nResearch Officer with the Automotive and Surface Transportation\
 nPortfolio of the National Research Council of Canada (NRC AST).\n\nDr. Bl
 ais’s expertise lies in the development\, verification and\nvalidation o
 f high-performance digital models for fluid mechanics\,\nheat transfer and
  complex multiphase phenomena. He has earned a BEng\nin Chemical Engineeri
 ng\, a Grande École Engineering Diploma (D.Ing.)\nfrom ENSTA ParisTech\, 
 a Master in Fundamental Fluid Mechanics from\nENSTA and a PhD in Chemical 
 Engineering from Polytechnique Montreal.\nDr. Blais is a Vanier Graduate S
 cholar (2013−2016) and has received\nthe Governor General’s Gold Acade
 mic Medal for his work on numerical\nmodelling of multiphase flows. He is 
 a strong advocate of open source\nsoftware for science and has contributed
  extensively to open source\nlibraries (Lethe\, deal.II).
