Title

Modelling Cellular Systems: Individual-Based Approaches

 Abstract

Agent based modelling allows us to simulate complex systems of interacting cells with great detail and flexibility, accounting for each individual cell's behaviour. Unfortunately, this level of detail often comes at the cost of analytical tractability, and greatly complicates the tasks of model fitting and validation. Coarse-graining can overcome some of these hurdles, though it poses its own challenges, especially in models which incorporate realistic biophysics. Paralleling the individual nature of agent-based modelling, advances in computer vision and microfluidics have allowed researchers to track individual cells in microscopy experiments. In this pre-comprehensive seminar, we will present some background material on these two complimentary approaches and suggest directions for future development.
