Boom Town Waterloo Region: Heritage in an Age of Growth and a World facing the Crises of Health, Equity and Climate

Thursday, November 12, 2020 7:00 pm - 7:00 pm EST (GMT -05:00)

A lecture with Rick Haldenby

Waterloo Region is the fastest-growing metropolitan area in Canada. The development boom is bringing dramatic change to its urban environment through intensification. The threat to heritage buildings and landscapes grows greater every day. At the same time cities are grappling with the climate crisis and pressure to deal with social equity and historical injustice. The pressures in cities across Canada are intense. Good minds are calling into question the very principles on which our approach to heritage preservation and planning are based and proposing a return to  practices that in past impinged on stable neighbourhoods and demolished historic buildings. This talk will consider these broader issues facing Canadian cities and Waterloo Region in particular.

This lecture is jointly offered by the University of Waterloo School of Architecture and the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario North Waterloo Regional Branch. We welcome all members and followers of the ACONW to join the School of Architecture community in attending this event.

This lecture will be available to view the week of November 16 on our YouTube channel.
