SUMMARY:Dilip da Cunha - The Invention of Land: Where Colonization begins b
 y\nDesign
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:DILIP DA CUNHA\, Columbia University\n\nWe live in an all-consu
 ming Ocean of Wetness\, a wetness that is\neverywhere in the air\, earth\,
  sea\, flora and fauna\, precipitating\,\nevaporating\, storming\, seeping
 \, soaking\, transpiring\, osmoting\,\nfreezing. We are wetness oursel
ves\, our wetness necessary to our\nexistence. However\, we do not learn t
hat we live in an Ocean of\nWetness. We learn instead that we live on an
Earth surface called\nland that we take for granted as existent and place
beyond all\ndifference\, assuming that all people experience it. In this
talk\, I\npresent land as a product of design in an Ocean of Wetness that\
nwe fail to acknowledge. It is a design that deploys four design\ndevice
 s: the geometric surface\, geometric line\, hydrologic cycle\, and\nlangua
ge of landscape. Together they create and maintain an Earth\nsurface tha
t serves as the ground of observation and habitation. It\nalso serves as t
he ground of a colonization that continues largely\nbecause this act of de
sign passes unnoticed and unquestioned. What\ndoes it take to acknowledge
land to be a product of design\; to\nrecognize that our real home is in an
Ocean of Wetness that is\neverywhere rather than on an Earth surface with
water somewhere? Does\nOcean offer an appreciation of more fundamental d
ifference in\nculture\; and does it open fresh possibilities for design i
n the face\nof climate change that threatens land with destruction?
