Dani Kastelein

Congratulations to Dani Kastelein, recipient of the Marj Schaefer Award.

Dani is a graduate student at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture who, alongside fellow student Jes Hanzelkova, helped coordinate the student-led initiative named ‘Treaty Lands, Global Stories’ from January 2018 to June 2020. Together they wrote a piece entitled ‘Breaking Canons’ for the publication galt., a student-run, peer-reviewed annual journal at the school. In November 2019, TLGS organized an exhibition at UWSA entitled ‘People, people should know.’ that showcased profiles of designers who are BIPOC and/or do work with marginalized or minority groups in the field of architecture, industrial design, and fabrication. Dani's thesis work seeks to identify the necessary elements which accompany the fish harvesting rituals of Indigenous people in Southern Georgian Bay such as the ability to build ‘incidental’ cabins for temporal habitation.
