Professor in the Cheriton School of Computer Science recognized for his work to advance natural language processing

The University of Waterloo’s Cheriton School of Computer Science celebrates Professor Jimmy Lin, who has been named a 2024 Fellow of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL) for his outstanding contributions to question answering and information retrieval. Professor Lin is the first faculty member from Waterloo to receive this prestigious recognition, joining an elite group of nine computer scientists worldwide honored this year.

A Cheriton Chair and co-director of the Waterloo Data and Artificial Intelligence Institute, Professor Lin has devoted over 25 years to advancing natural language processing (NLP) and information retrieval. His pioneering work has enabled intuitive access to information, from early question-answering systems to modern multilingual and multimodal search technologies. Beyond research, Professor Lin advocates for generative AI adoption across industries, promotes AI literacy starting in K-12 education, and supports responsible AI integration to empower diverse communities.
