The IST security team has received reports that University of Waterloo users are receiving malicious phishing emails impersonating the university’s president, Feridun Hamdullahpur. Be extra cautious of an email that would look similar to the below text:
From: Feridun Hamdullahpur
Subject: Message from Office of the President Feridun Hamdullahpur
Office of the President Feridun Hamdullahpur sent you a secure message, View secure message now.
Dr. Feridun Hamdullahpur
President and Vice-Chancellor
University of Waterloo.
Reminder: Be cautious of any suspicious email you receive. Under no circumstances should you open or extract unexpected zip files, run any files contained within the attachment, or click on links within the email. Doing so allows the malware access to your machine, which will render it unavailable until fixed. This process can take 1-2 business days.
What should you do if you receive such an email?
- Do not open any attachments or click on included links. Contact email@example.com if you have followed the link that was in the email.
- Delete the original message.
