Critical Media Lab (CML) and NIGHT\SHIFT are pleased to announce a collaborative hackathon-type event for artists, makers, designers, activists, and other creative types interested in the intersection of public space and digital media. Teams will be given 24 hours to prepare and present a prototype. You can register a team or come solo and get teamed up. The event will open with three surprises on Friday night:

  • A surprise guest speaker to inspire your art hacking efforts.
  • A surprise location for which you will design your project.
  • A surprise theme to guide your invention.

Art/Hack event logoProjects will be judged on their technical feasibility and engagement with the given theme and location. Participants will be given access to workspace at 44 Gaukel, hardware and software to model their prototypes, free consultation with tech experts, and refreshments funded by the City of Kitchener.

Judging will take place on Saturday by a panel of art- and space-hacking experts. The winning team will automatically earn a spot on the 2016 Night\Shift lineup. To complete their project after the hackathon, they will also receive access to the following:

  • dedicated workspace in the CML
  • computers, cameras, projectors, small electronics as needed
  • tools and basic hardware
  • tech support
  • intelligent critical feedback from the CML community
