Thursday, April 9, 2015 — 5:00 PM to Saturday, May 2, 2015 — 5:00 PM EDT

The Department of Fine Arts and the University of Waterloo Art Gallery (UWAG) present two thesis exhibitions by MFA candidates from the graduate program in Fine Arts at the University of Waterloo. MFA Thesis gives the campus and community-at-large an opportunity to see the end result of two years of intensive research and studio production by emerging visual artists who are also recipients of the annual Keith and Winifred Shantz Internship Award.

This is part one of the MFA Thesis show and runs from April 9 to May 2, 2015. Regular UWAG hours are Tuesday to Saturday 12:00-5:00 pm.

Gallery One: Sarah Kernohan | Sift

drawing detailSift is a drawing installation influenced by the artist’s experiences in nature, most recently a five-day hike along the Lagavegur Trail in Iceland. The drawings recall this walk through a landscape that was at times out-of-focus, while at others absolutely clear, providing the landscape with an evocative and ever-shifting identity. Each drawing represents a process of trying to understand and re-create the way that sediment settles and deposits on snowfields after a season of storms.

Gallery Two: Liz Little | Small Worlds

coloured lines from painting detailSmall Worlds is an installation of wall drawing that explores the possibilities of shape and colour through repetition and scale. Combining drawing materials with printmaking techniques, I use my hand and body to replace the printing press in the creation of uniquely reproduced shapes. Movement and rhythm are initiated by repetition, and through colour there is the opportunity to examine the relationship between the viewing experience and perception, cognition and sensation.
