The Office of Research presents this Research Talks expert panel, Boosting Vaccine Uptake, examining the barriers and strategies associated with vaccine programs. The four Waterloo experts include professor of history, Heather MacDougall.

Exploring the historical, social, and cultural forces behind vaccine hesitancy 

Heather MacDougall is an associate professor of history specializing in the history of medicine, public health, and health policy in Canada. Her research focuses on vaccine resistancein Canada and in particular the public and professional reactions to the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine and immunization campaigns from the 1960s to the present. She also works closely with public health agencies to understand how historical factors have impacted vaccine uptake. At Research Talks, she will discuss the progression of vaccine hesitancy and how its contested history influences interactions between health care providers and the public.
