UWAG presents Roula Partheniou + Kelly Mark Export this event to calendar

Thursday, September 17, 2015 — 5:00 PM to Saturday, October 31, 2015 — 5:00 PM EDT

image and logo Gallery One: Roula Partheniou | Inventory

Toronto-based Roula Partheniou makes remarkable sculptural replicas based on domestic items, construction materials and office supplies. Whether stacked, shelved or left leaning against the wall, the artist’s use of precise forms and a reductive colour palette elicits a double take

that invites viewers to pause and reconsider how their initial reading of common visual cues can often be deceptive. Inventory is a survey exhibition that recontextualizes a selection of works made between 2010-2015, ranging from sculptures that first appeared in the solo exhibition Never Odd or Even to new and more recent works that formed parts of the artist’s installation House & Home & Garden. Responding to the unique circumstance of the gallery, Inventory is an opportunity to explore new pairings and relationships between the artist’s accumulated lexicon of objects. Roula Partheniou is represented by MKG127, Toronto. www.roulapartheniou.com

Gallery Two: Kelly Mark | 108 Leyton Ave

Toronto artist Kelly Mark makes work informed by a keen interest in everyday observations, from compiling lists to channel-surfing to recombining common phrases. 108 Leyton Ave is perhaps her most personal work comprising a precisely synced video of the artist essentially playing cards and conversing with herself. Filmed over many months and titled after the street address of a house that the artist lived in for several years, the push and pull of the exchange between the mirror images is alternately tense, funny and engrossing. Expressing the artist’s full range of interests while cleverly encapsulating nearly 20 years of artmaking, 108 Leyton Ave is a revealing portrait of physical and emotional endurance. Kelly Mark is represented by Diaz Contemporary, Toronto. www.kellymark.com
