AFM students with competition prizes

UWaterloo SAF takes first place in the 2012 ICAO Battle for CA$H

The School of Accounting and Finance (SAF) prides itself for providing Accounting and Financial Management (AFM) students with excellent experiential learning opportunities; and one of the biggest is the annual case competitions. "Participating in these competitions allows you to bridge the gap between industry and the classroom" says Donna Heng (BAFM '13).

Donna was one of the student representatives for the 2012/2013 CFA Investment Research Challenge (CFA IRC) team, an annual global competition providing students with hands-on experience in financial analysis. Participants assume the role of a research analyst and are tested on their ability to value a stock, write an initiation-of-coverage report, and present their recommendations.

Professors Craig Geoffrey and Ranjini Jha helped the team prepare - providing feedback and challenging the students in mock Q&A sessions. "They were both integral in helping us achieve the results we did," says Donna. "They definitely played a huge role in amplifying the caliber of our performance during the competition."

UWaterloo SAF students also compete at junior level competitions. Faizan Siddiqi is a second year AFM student and was part of the 2012 winning team in the ICAO Battle for CA$H. The Battle for CA$H is an Ontario-wide competition that tests future Chartered Professional Accountants (CPAs) on their soft skills. "It was basically a simulation in which you traded investments. The goal was to increase your net worth and maintain healthy relationships with other groups." Faizan credits his competition experience with improving his business skills and helping him to secure his current co-op placement.

When asked what gives UWaterloo its competitive edge in the competition world, Donna explains that it's the School’s innovative approach to education – an academic Learning Model that’s closely integrated with co-op. "The lessons that we've learned from working in the industry truly sets us apart from the competition in many regards, from technical proficiency to our professionalism. The blend of real world experience with a strong academic foundation makes UWaterloo students a force to be reckoned with at these competitions."

AFM students will participate in the National Investment Banking Competition on January 7-9, 2014 in Vancouver, BC, as well as the CA$H Competition on January 25, 204 and the CFA Investment Research Challenge on March 18-19, 2014, both in Toronto, ON.
